There are few women with more horror titles behind their name than June’s Hothouse Hottie. Her appearance would suggest she’s anything but the ‘final girl’, let alone one of our generation’s most prolific heroines of horror, but then again that’s why Joss chose her! With seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a selection of horror movies, both good and bad, and a recently discontinued TV series (thanks a lot CW!), this month’s leading lady could be none other than Sarah Michelle Gellar.
She says she loves to freak people out, she says she loves to be scared, we simply say: “we bloody love you”. From the minute she burst on to our television screens back in 1997 as everyone’s favourite peppy cheerleading vampire slayer with a wit sharper than a razor blade and hair bouncier than of that in an L’Oreal advert, a million hearts worldwide began to melt.
It turned out to be a good year for both us and SMG. She starred in teen slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer and followed in Drew Barrymore’s footstep as the unexpected early kill in Scream 2. Poor Cici.
Of course 1999 made our knees buckle when Sarah transformed into the absolutely evil and ridiculously hot Kathryn Merteuil in Cruel Intentions. We really don’t blame you Ryan, if we had a stepsister that sexy…
Sarah returned to horror’s silver screen in the American remake of Japanese horror The Grudge in 2004 (read our review here), which in our opinion is one of the better, if not the best, American remake of a Japanese horror film, so kudos there, SMG. The following year Sarah took on the role of Joanna Mills in The Return; a traveling business woman and self-harmer who begins to have nightmare about a murder that happened 15 years ago.
Her most recent big screen horror (well kind of) offering was Possession in 2009, a cracking little flick about a woman whose life begins to get pretty weird after a car accident leaves her husband and his brother in a coma and she gradually begins to figure out that something is very, very wrong.
It saddens us greatly here at The Horror Hothouse that Sarah’s latest TV offering Ringer wasn’t picked up by the CW for a second series. We understand that the show has its faults and maybe it was a little hard for viewers who come in after it’s already started to follow due to all the twists and turns, but it was a damned good show with a great cast and plot. Plus it was nice to have SMG back on our television sets *sigh*.
So, to conclude this month’s Hothouse Hottie; we’ve seen her die countless times, run for her life more often than that and kick more vampire, ghost and demon butt than any other woman (or man for that fact) in the business, plus we find it hard to believe that anyone out there isn’t just a little bit in love with this blonde haired beauty. Long may she reign over us as our modern-day Scream Queen.
