The Garden of Sin graphic novel preview
Tyler Kendal Faraone’s and Meghan Dawson’s The Garden of Sin is a graphic novel project currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.
Within its pages the mysteriously draped figure of the Shadow invites us to join him on a journey from the Wood of Despair through the successive levels of Hell. Each of the levels corresponds to one of the Seven Deadly Sins, such as the Abyss of Lust or the Slaughterhouse of the Gluttons, where the Shadow judges the Damned for their sins.
Illustrator Tyler Kendal Faraone has described his graphic novel with verse by Meghan Dawson, as a children’s book for grown-ups. On many levels he is spot on. Remember those picture books with the page of verse alternated with the illustration; well The Garden of Sin follows that model. Faraone has worked exclusively in traditional hands-on media employing no digital trickery illustrate Meghan Dawson’s verse and the images are very redolent of the woodcuts used to illustrate books of fairy tales, especially those very gruesome European ones. Think Aubrey Beardsley by way of Egon Schiele with a good-sized twist of Clive Barker to top them off.
Hats off to Faraone and Dawson for the DIY punk ethic shown in trying to finance this exciting project through Kickstarter, you can find out more and pledge your support here. Check out the official website here and follow The Garden of Sin on Twitter at @TheGardenofSin.
