Penny Dreadful Preview
Lurking in the deepest, darkest (not to mention dankest) corners of Victorian London are some of literature’s most terrifying characters and, in just one month’s time, they’ll be in our living rooms too. On 11th May, the likes of Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and some iconic figures from Bram Stoker’s Dracula will have new life breathed into them in Penny Dreadful, Showtime’s latest TV offering.
A frightening psychological thriller that Showtime boss David Nevins’ teased was going to “scare the shit out of people”, Penny Dreadful will take the form of an eight-episode series starring Hothouse Hottie Eva Green, 30 Days of Night and Halloween H2O heartthrob Josh Hartnett and former James Bond Timothy Dalton.
The series will focus on Ethan Chandler (Hartnett), a brash yet charming American who, after agreeing to assist well-seasoned African explorer Sir Malcom (Dalton) on his deeply personal quest, finds himself caught up in Victorian London’s seedy underbelly, which is swamped with things (and people) that go bump in the night.
Dark Shadows star Eva Green will star as Vanessa Ives, an enigmatic and utterly composed heroine who proves herself a force to be reckoned with.
Doctor Who heroine Billie Piper will play Brona Croft, an Irish immigrant who is seeking to escape her thorny past.
Reeve Carney will take on the role of the forever young, forever beautiful Dorian Gray.
Harry Treadaway will show us the softer side of Victor Frankenstein.
Danny Sapani will play Sembene, the mysterious longtime ally of Sir Malcolm.
In other exciting news the wonderful Anna Chancellor will also be appearing, taking on the role of Claire Ives.
Created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan and executive produced by Oscar winner Sam Mendes, we’re feeling pretty confident that Penny Dreadful will be the highlight of our TV programmes over the next few months. The series will premiere on 11th May at 10PM ET/PT on Showtime. The series will also be aired on Sky Atlantic who co-produced the series.
