If you ever wondered what a Spanish exorcist road movie would be like then Asmodexia is your movie. Eloy (Luis Marco) and his granddaughter Alba (Claudia Pons) are on their way to Barcelona, stopping off there and there to exorcise troubled children, mental patients and druggies as you do. As Luis and Alba perform their rituals Spain, gripped in unseasonably hot weather for the time of year, counts down the five days towards a mysterious Resurrection Day.
Meanwhile some weird stuff is going down at the mental hospital where Alba was born, obviously to an inmate suffering demoniac possession. Its only when Eloy and Alba reach their final destination that the true relationships between them, the people they have performed exorcisms upon and their mysterious pursuers are woven together to reveal the really momentous event that is about to happen.
Asmodexia is a strange little movie that bolts elements of Rapture movies, Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen upon the road movie format. While not performing exorcisms Eloy and Alba spend a lot of time chatting as they wander through swathes of truely beautifully shot (by Xavi Gariga) Spanish countryside. And gorehounds, there’s also plenty of blood!
Bing Crosby and Bob Hope never did a road movie like this I gice Asmodexia a big 555/666
Asmodexia has just been released in the UK on DVD
