If you are looking for the ideal Halloween present for the special ghoul in your life then maybe we have just found it for you.
The Frightfest Guide to Exploitation Movies is a 240 page full colour illustrated treasury of the kind of flicks that put bums on seats in fleapit grindhouse cinemas in the days before home video brought them into the comfort of our own homes.
Comprising of an A-Z guide to Exploitation genres from Angels to Zombies and a historic selection of movies dating from 1930’s Africa Speaks to 1985’s The Tenement, Alan Jones samples just about every kind of exploitation genre you could imagine from Corman biker pics through Nuns (The Unholy Convent), Nazis (Gestapo’s Last Orders, Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS), Cannibals (The Last Survivor, Cannibal Holocaust), Women in prison (Bare Behind Bars, Women in Cages) , Kung Fu (Shanghai Lil and the Sun Luck Kid), Blaxploitation (Black Shampoo, The Black Street Fighter), Skin Flicks (Confessions of a Young American Housewife, Vice Squad Women), Sci Fi (Food of the Gods, The Chain Reaction) and of course plenty of gory Horror, not to mention everything in between like gay biker pic The Pink Angels.
Good to see some old favourites like Hammer’s Curse of the Werewolf, Lon Chaney’s Spider Baby and Jack Cardiff’s The Mutations getting some love amongst the more bonkers stuff like Gator Bait and Shogun Assassin, but the real joy of this book is discovering some new stuff you hadn’t even dreamt about in your wildest nightmares I give the Frightfest Guide to Exploitation Movies a 666/66
I’d defy anyone to read this book without coming away with a long wish list of movies that they want to see.
The Frightfest Guide to Exploitation Movies is out now price £16.99 UK and $24.95 USA.
